Oysters are hermaphrodites, meaning they can change their gender throughout their lives, often starting as males and then becoming female. An oyster becomes an adult when it turns one year old and can live as long as 20 years. They breathe like fish, they have gills. Oysters are vegetarians. They eat algae by filtering it out of the water. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day. That's about as much water as you use in a 10-minute shower. As oyster generations settle on one another and grow, they form reefs that provide shelter for other animals, like fish and crabs. One way you can help oysters is to recycle oyster shells! Did you know it is illegal to throw away oyster shells in the state of North Carolina? Oyster shells must be taken to official recycling drop-off locations so we can properly and strategically put them back in the water in areas that are permitted by the state and federal government. These areas are typically more inclined to support the new growth of oysters. Baby oysters, or oyster spat, need a hard place to settle on and grow, and research proves they prefer oyster shells to anything else.

We donate 10% of bracelet sales towards cleaning up ocean plastic.
