Moorish idols live in tropical and subtropical waters across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, where they can be found around coral reefs, rocky reefs, and lagoons. They are easily recognized by their bold black, white, and yellow bands, pointed snouts, and long, curved dorsal fins. Their scientific genus name, Zanclus, comes from the Greek word for “sickle,” referring to the distinctive shape of that fin. Moorish idols use their small mouths and bristle-like teeth to feed among rocks and coral.
